Our Motto1

When is it OK to ask someone if they are expecting?

December 3rd, 2009

Today we would like to share with the world a very important tip so listen up :)

Working in a children’s boutique we see pregnant women on a very regular basis. Some are just showing a little bit- others looking like they are minutes away from delivery. We would like to share our view on when it is OK to ask or if they are expecting.

The answer is simple: This is when it is Ok

1. If you can see the babies head starting to come out.

2. If the ladies water has broken and she is screaming for you to call 911

3. If she is wearing a belly shirt and you see this.baby_bump_foot

The inspiration for this blog came to me the other day when I was working and a lady asked me if I would share my opinion on a gift to get for a new baby, she then said “I figured you are the expert considering you are expecting yourself, right?”
With a polite smile on my face, I replied ” Actually, I am not but I would be more than happy to help you pick something out”  What I would have like to say was ” Are you freaking serious lady? You must be blind and crazy! How rude”

It blew my mind! Not trying to brag on myself here- but I am not a large woman. I do not have  six pack abs, but I wear a size 8, work out 4 times a week and would consider myself in decent shape. That particular day I was wearing a “baby doll” style shirt (very cute I may add, from Forever 21) I was a bit bloated and had just had lunch- but by no means did I look pregnant.  I left work that day feeling that I should start starving myself  and do the 6 Minute Abs workout video 40 times before I went to bed.

Women come in all shapes and sizes, especially pregnant women. Although someone may look 8 months pregnant how do you know that maybe she just gave birth and is still very swollen? Could you imagine how hurtful that would be to a Mom that just gave birth and is very hormonal and depressedthat she still is carrying a load of baby weight?  Some women carry theirr baby weight around their waistline for many years after they have given birth, it is not always the easiest to lose.  Others may not want people to know that they are expecting and are trying to hide their baby bumps. Or, who knows- they could have a tumor growing in their belly, or  just a 1/2 gallon of mint chocolate chip ice cream. It is best to hold your tongue rather than to be wrong and truly hurt someones feeling.

This is a little experiment I did to show everyone that even though a girl may look pregnant- she is not. These pics are of a good friend- she is about 130 lbs, 5′ 9″ and wears a size 6.  After a big meal- and with bad posture, she could easily look a few months prego. (first pic) but as you will see in the 2nd pic, she is obviously not and is a thin girl.

Last but not least, we will leave you with a few things NEVER to say to a pregnant woman.

1.  OMG- you’re huge! It must be twins!

2.  You haven’t had that baby yet? You must be over due.

3.  I’ll bet you are gonna have some serious stretch marks after that baby comes out.

4. Do you even know who the father is?

5. That will be one cute baby if it takes after it’s father.

Have you ever been asked if you were pregnant when you are not? Or maybe someone has made a rude comment about your baby bump? Please share!
